"Furthur" is a band made up of Phil Lesh and Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead along with Jeff Chimenti, John Kadlecik, Joe Russo, Sunshine Becker, & Jeff Pehrson. I was commissioned to do this piece for a fan that lives in Pittsburgh. It incorporates different symbolism from the band. |

Two little piggiesKathryn Carr 2008 ©
This paper cut was made for Lisa, an American expat I met while I was living in Baku. She is very adventurous, while her sister was more content to stay close to home. Lisa likes pigs and wanted something that would portray both she and her sister.

The Rat,the Toad, and the MoleKathryn Carr 2008 ©
The Rat, The Toad and The Mole
Three families that call themselves the Rats, the Toads, and the Moles. These three families are very close and go on a lot of adventures together. The wife of the toad clan wanted an image that combined the family animals doing something together. Since the husbands all are avid mountain bikers we decided on having everyone on a three seat bike. I did three of these paper cuts slightly different one for each family with the family animal in the front.

Street Party Kathryn Carr 2008©
While in Baku I helped organize a street party with another neighbor. It was a lot of work planning this event, each house hosted either a game or a large table of food. There was "cornhole" toss game, bubbles, bobbing for apples, grilling, strung bunting, ethnic foods, and the big event was a recycled junk/ box car race. The day of the party we had some super strong gusting winds and almost canceled the event. In the end we all decided to brave the wind and had lots of fun. The friend that helped me wanted to remember that day so she commissioned me to recreate the event on paper.

While overseas I did a lot of custom works for expat families. This one depicts the Old City in the heart of Baku. Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan (population well over 2 million people) . The Old City is surrounded by a great stone wall and still has cobblestone roads. This is the place to go to see an ancient bath house, and the miniature book museum (over 3,000 books) as well as many other buildings. It also hosts countless shops selling rugs, hats, metal work, and fine art.
In this paper cut I wanted to highlight the architecture of some of the unique buildings and the wares that are displayed for sale. Even though the city is bustling with people, I decided to do a single street sweeper. The street sweepers were mostly all elderly ladies that used brooms made from brush tied together on a long wooden handle. My heart went out to them, such long hard hours of sweeping while traffic rushed by.

Back Yard Kathryn Carr 2010 ©
A neighbor of my parents desired a piece of art that showed different elements of her back yard.
In the middle of the piece is an image of some decorative metal work on her porch, surrounding that is her address (which I blocked out in this photo) above her address is her bird bath, bird feeder, fence, ferns, some of the many animals that visit her yard, and the lovely trees that are home to a variety of birds.
